Sometimes I hate writing these DIG posts because it’s so difficult to not come off like I’m reviewing a record. That’s the main reason I seldom do new albums. And, I seldom write about recordings I just bought. These are simply albums I am digging on and want to bring attention to. It basically starts with the shuffle button on iTunes and ends with me hearing something I haven’t hit up in a while. A stint of excessive looping ensues and I share it.

Not sure why, but I felt like I needed to say that… Anyhow, on to the review…crap, I mean DIG.

Trumpeter Josh Lawrence’s 2010 release, Roots, may actually be one of my favorites from last year. Nine tracks of East Coast bliss he calls soul bop (not sure how I feel about that- just conjures up images from Miles Davis in the ’80s but whatever) which just kind of slaps you in the face. Lawrence is joined by bassist, Ken Pendergast, drummer, Mike De Castro, and alto saxophonist, Mike Cemprola.

Below is some nice footage from the recording session…
