This week’s DIG is, for me, a testament to how the right player can make any instrument sound good in a jazz setting (sorry for the slam on B-3s; I’m just not a huge fan when they’re used for jazz). Sam Yahel, however, mixes great arrangements with awesome musicians and really knocks it out of the park.

Truth And Beauty (Origin, 2007) has been a go-to album for me for a while-Literally, years. Yahel leads two of my favs, Brian Blade (drums) and Joshua Redman (Tenor Sax) through Paul Simon, Ornette Coleman, and his own tunes. Like most (or all) organ trios, they are sans bassist (I won’t that against them…I guess) but Yahel throws out some nice left hand grooves that totally makes up for it.
